After doing our Insect theme lessons I noticed she have a special love for butterflies. So I thought of adding in a butterfly unit for her. I also enjoyed preparing activities for this lovely theme. Who doesn’t love these colorful fluttery cuties!!
During this week one of our plant in the front yard flowered and it was quite a sight with light pink flowers. One day when weather was pleasant we clicked some pictures together before it wither away.
Butterfly Safari Toob Match
To start off the week we did an object to picture match using the safari toob butterflies and the free printables. A great activity for visual discrimination and we also discussed about how each butterflies are unique in it’s design.

Pattern Block Mats
These are a part of Melissa & Doug pattern block sets. I prepped it up by selecting the needed shapes and she did that well. We named the shapes and counted how many of each shapes are in the butterfly.
Butterfly Counting Sticks
A simple DIY using craft sticks and butterflies foam stickers from dollar tree. I wrote the numbers on craft sticks and gave her the butterflies to peel and stick on each craft sticks as given. She was so focused and excited with this activity.
Later I gave her some numbered clothespin ( from target dollar spot) to clip on the corresponding sticks. A fun fine motor exercise too.
Lacing & Stamping
Finally I could use these butterfly stamps which I purchased long back from Michaels! I drew a big ‘B’ on a paper and let her stamp on that as she please.
She tried some lacing work too using these cute wooden butterfly which is again from target dollar spot.
Butterfly Dot marker page
These are also free printables and I gave her some butterfly sequins to glue on the dots. Sometimes it’s good to twist things up.
She also worked on the lowercase letter dot marker page. This time I gave her some pom pom magnets and a cookie sheet for the work. It’s fun to trace fingers on the poms once finished.
Fine Motor practice
These colorful butterflies are available for free to practice scissor skills and I have to say this girl is a fan of any cutting activities.
I also used these butterfly cutting strips for some math work. We touched up on patterns using these on another paper. Once she lost interest I got a sectional box and let her sort the butterflies which she enjoyed. Cleaning up and learning together!

Crafts
We did a simple paper plate butterfly when R came back from school on Tuesday. They first painted the paper plate using watercolors with their favorite color. Once it’s dry we cut them in half and made it as wings. They colored a craft stick and decorated with eyes and antennas. We used the tacky glue to fix all these pieces together.
Usually on Wednesdays I have two other kids joining us over zoom for a craft. This was our craft for this week. They all enjoyed making this cute toilet paper roll butterfly. Needless to say their favorite part was decorating the purple wings. I have linked below the inspiration post.
Another easy and simple butterfly chalk art for toddlers or preschoolers. I cut a butterfly pattern from a paper and taped it on black paper. Use a double sided tape to make this step easy. We used our colorful chalks to rub on top of that. Make sure to cover the edges too so that the outline is visible.
Playdough Invitation
Her favorite go to activity this week was this Playdough tray. She made lot of butterflies and decorated with the jewels. I always use homemade Playdough for these invitations. Here’s what’s in the tray!
- Homemade red & pink Playdough
- Jewels
- Buttons
- Googly eyes
- Craft sticks
- Tools and cutters
We also made a caterpillar and discussed the lifecycle of a butterfly. She loved to hear about this ‘magic’ and learned quickly the various stages of butterfly.
