Leaf Stamping

M attend a playgroup every Tuesdays and they have something new on craft table every week. Today it was leaf stamping using potatoes. I was intrigued by the meticulous cuttings on potato to make a leaf pattern. Hence evenif M was not much into artworks I wanted to try it at home.

Materials needed:

  • Halved Potatoes
  • Red, Orange and Yellow paint
  • Brown marker
  • A paper roll

First I halved the potatoes and cut slits carefully to make a leaf pattern. Use a small knife and gently chip off the cuts. I have this wooden sectional bowl that I scored from goodwill. Fill the bowl with the red, orange and yellow paint. I used crayola washable paints here.

Note: Take a little blob of paint and dilute it with water very well. If paint is more it pools up on paper and the prints won’t be visible.

Spread some paper on table or floor and secure them with a tape. We tried on the floor just to have more space to do stampings if they please! Draw tree trunk using brown marker on the paper. If you have an older child you can ask them to do so. Now its ready for work!

M hesitated to start but after I showed her she picked one up and dabbed it on the paper. She couldn’t press it well so the prints were faint. Not bad for a first time stamper. She liked the process of stamping and did more of them . I encouraged her to dip in different paint and try again.

She did pretty well at hoy than at the playgroup and was more brave around the watery paint. In the evening R came from school and he was excited to see the set up. He went on a stamping frenzy and the paper was full with colourful leaves!
