Spider Painting

M is not a big fan of painting and tries to avoid anything that gets her hand messy. But I believe painting is a great way to express yourself as well as get your creativity flowing. So I want to gently push her to try and explore some painting activities.

Here is the set up for a spider art using black tempera paint and potato masher

Materials needed:

  • Potato masher
  • Black construction paper strips
  • Black tempera paint
  • Googly eyes

Spread a paper on any flat surface. I have used mala paper roll from Ikea on flisat table. Using potato masher dip in black paint and stamp on the paper to create the body. Then put black construction paper for legs on the sides and googly eyes on face. You need not glue the paper strips as it will stick on when the paint dries off.

The potato masher works great if your kid is sensitive to paints like mine since it has a long handle for comfortable grip and firm stamping. She could do 2-3 body stampings on the paper but was not much interested in placing the paper strips.

I showed her how to place the paper and eyes over the black body and she copied me. No wonder they say kids are sponges they just take in what they see and what they hear!

Once R was back from school he also made a spider on his very own. Even if the kid doesn’t complete the work as intended don’t freak out. It’s all about the process and exploration at this age! So relax and keep painting! See her getting into exploring mode with her fingers dipped into the paint 😄
