One of the many beautiful books by Nancy Tafuri. Such a simple text and colorful pictures. It’s also good to introduce counting concepts to toddlers.
The story is about a mama hen and her five little chicks who stagger off and find various inedible things to eat. Mama hen brings all of them back to a corn patch and teach them to scratch and find the food. And in the night she tucks them under her wings. A great expression of mom love!
Materials needed:
- Yellow shredded paper
- Small easter eggs
- Yellow round erasers
- Fisher price little people hen
- A small nest ( from Christmas tree shop)
- Egg carton
- Tongs and rakes
Spread the yellow shredded paper in the bin and sprinkle the erasers around. If you have little chicks they are more fun and you can hide them in the eggs. As I don’t have any chicks I let them pretend the erasers as chicks. It was a great add in as they enjoyed collecting stacking and hiding them.
M loved the tongs and it was pretty easy for her to grasp the shredded paper. R played with the eggs and erasers for a while. We also practiced some counting and addition too!
I love those little hands getting busy in the bin whenever I set them up. A great way to ensure sibling play and conflict resolution.
