Letter H Activities

I have to admit that we’re getting a bit lazy after R’s schools were closed. We still do some impromptu crafts or sensory bins but no planned activities ever. I hope we could get back on track this week. Before moving on I want to summarize our Letter H activities in here. Take a look at our weekly lesson plan for Letter H below.

If you’ve missed previous letter of the week activities please read them below.

Day 1

🔸Object Bin

For Letter H week I had the following in our object bin – House, Horse, Hammer, Hippo, Heart, Hen. Use what you have in hand and let them explore freely. Hold up each object and emphasize the vocabulary. You can also prompt them by supplying the beginning sound /h/.

🔸Hearts Beading

A simple yet powerful fine motor activity. You will need – Styrofoam base, color sticks, Heart beads. I got all these supplies from dollar tree. Push down the sticks on styrofoam and let them color sort the heart beads to the sticks.

🔸 Letter Collage

Supplies needed.

After printing the block letter H I let her paint it red using a slice of cut pool noodle. It’s a wonderful painting tool for those little hands and we use it frequently to paint anything.

Once it’s dried I cut the H out and let her stick the foam heart stickers onto it. At the end glue it down on another piece of paper .

🔸Dot marker page

We used the alphabet dot marker page from Themeasuredmom. Her favorite dot marker is purple and now she resists any other color that I offer. Hope this purple craze will end soon.

Day 2

🔸 Book: The day it rained hearts

A lovely book that suits Valentine theme. The story is about Cornelia Augusta who collect hearts while raining and hand pick each heart to send to her dear friends. 💕

🔸 Tissue paper heart

Inspired by the raining hearts I created this activity for her. I just used some kitchen tissue paper cut in heart shape and an almost empty paint kit mixed with water. Using the eye dropper to transfer water is a great fine motor work! The colors were so vibrant and spread beautifully on paper💕

🔸 Make a Valentine Card

An invitation to make a valentine day card. You don’t need to have all these just some markers and heart stickers would do. Try to let them create something on their own. Help only if needed and that way you grow the creativity in them.

Things on the tray :

❤️ Heart foam stickers.
❤️Rose petals.
❤️Pom poms.
❤️Glitter & Glitter Glue.
❤️Stampers.
❤️ Heart stickers.
❤️Markers.
❤️Foam sheets cut in strips.

🔸 Heart roll & cover

This free printable is from the valentine pack from here. I felt this will be good for her to get familiar with the dice markings and also to get some number sense.

Day 3

🔸Book: The Napping House

A wonderful book by Audrey wood which has a lot of repetitive text perfect for young readers. The illustrations are so beautiful that I couldn’t take my eyes off the beautiful house pictured at the end.

🔸Shape House

We did a cut and glue activity to make a shapes house. I cut some multicolored paper into rectangular strips. Then I cut two squares for window , a triangle for roof and a rectangle for door. While gluing them down we talked about each shapes and directed her to complete the house.

🔸 H is for House craft

Afternoon we did a similar house craft using the block letter H printable. Just add some cut pieces for door , windows and roof to complete this simple letter craft.

🔸House printables

We used letter H printables from Thisreadingmama which you can download for free from here. I printed the dot sticker page (used round office stickers) and beginning sounds cut and paste page.

Day 4

🔸 Book: The old Hat

A fun book to read if your kid loves hats. The story is about Herbert who try a lot different type of hats after seeing his friends with the latest trendy hats. M loved the various collection of hats at the end of the book.

🔸 Hammer the Letters

A simple fine motor work activity combined with letter recognition. I used some letter stickers on the Styrofoam base and asked her to hammer the golf tees to the letter I called out.

🔸Hole punch art

A beautiful craft that I saw over Pinterest. You may need a hole puncher and some strips of multicolored paper. For the detailed steps check out the blogpost here.

🔸 Letter Tracing mat

We used the letter tracing mat by Lavinia Pop. It has the numbered right formation of letters . This looks awesome to learn letter writing for preschoolers.

Day 5

🔸Letter H mini book

This mini book is also a free printable from Thisreadingmama letter H pack linked above. Staple the pages together and read it with your child to learn some new words for letter H.

🔸Heart Tree

I used some leftover cardboard to make this activity. First draw five trees and glue on bottle caps as a holder for the heart gems. Using the tongs place the gems on tree while practicing counting.

🔸Build a Hippo

This one is a perfect valentine craft too. You can read about the details here. Get the free printable here and make this adorable craft with your toddler.

M used brown paint stick to paint the hippo. Then as directed she placed the eyes, teeth & heart.

🔸Hippo printables

These printables are from Confessions of Homeschooler Letter H pack. We used the case sorting and color sorting printables. The dot marker page is from Thisreadingmama.

Sensory Bin

🔸Fill the Heart

Here’s what’s in the bin.
.
💓 Red dyed rice.
💓Pink and Red glass gems( from DT). 💓 Red heart boxes ( from Walmart)

She loved those pink and red hearts and played hiding in rice and looking through them. I also used the opportunity to teach colors red& pink and the shape heart. Then she started collecting hearts in jars and the rice in heart boxes. She played in it for almost 45 minutes which is an all time record!!

Playdough Invitation

I made red Playdough for valentine theme and it stays strong for the past 4 months. Here’s what’s in the tray.
