Letter K Activities

After a long break we are back to our Letter of the week activities. We have been shifting homes recently and I couldn’t catch up with my blog posts in the midst of the packing and moving chaos. I can’t wait to get our new house settled into a cozy and restful abode for all of us. While that’s in progress I don’t want to hold off her activities and I’m trying my best to spend some intentional time with her. This tot school plan helps me to schedule some time in my day to be with her playing and exploring.

Here’s s the weekly plan for Letter K activities

Letter K Lesson plan

If you’ve missed previous letter of the week activities please read them below.

Letter A /Letter B /Letter C /Letter D / Letter E / Letter F / Letter G / Letter H

Day 1

🔸Picture Cards

Usually we start with a beginning sound object bin. But I couldn’t find much things that start with letter K. So I just printed these free beginning sound picture cards from Themeasuredmom and inserted them into our clear pocket dice. We rolled dice taking turns and named the objects that came up.

🔸Kick the alphabet balloon

A fun gross motor activity to learn alphabets. I wrote some letters on the balloons and asked her to kick the ones that I call out. May be I should have wrote with a sharpie to make it more visible. Later we pooled them together and just kicked them around after we say ready set go! She loved that game much better.

🔸 Letter Collage

Supplies needed.

🔸Dot marker page

The Dot marker page can be found at Thisreadigmama Letter K pack printables.

Day 2

🔸 Book: Kite Day

A lovely book that suits Kite theme. It’s the story about bear and mole making and flying a kite. It has very minimal text and a simple story with a beautiful ending.

🔸 Kite beads Threading

These printables are from Confessions of Homeschooler Letter K pack. I gave her some blue beads to thread on the yarn. You can also use a pipe cleaner to make threading the beads easier.

🔸 Kite Craft

Supplies needed:

  • Cardstock/Sketch paper.
  • Craft sticks.
  • Washable paint.
  • Masking tape.
  • Colorful streamers.
  • Yarn.

How to make ➡️
📌 Make a plus sign on the paper using masking tape. Let them paint their color of choice in the 4 quadrants.
📌 Once dried cut a diamond shape out (Of course we’re making a kite).
📌 Glue craft sticks on the edges and in the middle part. You may have to cut some to fit in size.
📌 Cut some multicolored streamers and staple them together( I cut through the middle of streamers to make it thin).
📌Staple the streamers at the end along with a yarn to make a colorful kite ready to fly.

🔸 Kite printables

We used the alphabet dot marker page from Themeasuredmom and she used some Pom Pom magnets on a cookie sheet to fill them The kite shape puzzle printables are from Confessions of a Homeschooler blog which I have linked above.

Day 3

🔸 Book: Does a Kangaroo have mother too?

It’s not really a Kangaroo book but I picked it just because there’s Kangaroo on the first page. Sometimes you have to work with what you got. But it’s a great book to read about the various jungle animals and M loved it because there’s lot of mommies and babies in there.

🔸Key Rubbing

I had some old keys lying around and I gave them to her to explore. She was so fascinated with them and tried to open the doors in our house with those. Then we did the classic rubbing experiment using those keys.

For this activity you need to keep the keys under a sheet of paper and use some crayons to rub over them. You can tape the paper down if you want to. We used rock crayons and it was much easier to rub.

🔸 Silver Key Craft

Supplies needed:

  • Cardboard
  • Aluminium Foil
  • Elmer’s glue

First cut a key shape out of the cardboard. Glue down the shredded pieces of aluminium foil on top of the cardboard. Make sure to cover every portion of cardboard.

🔸Key Shadow match

It’s a great problem solving activity where you need to match the keys with their shadow. It was extremely tricky for M as many of them looked alike and she managed to finish it with lots of help from mama. You can get the free printable over here.

Day 4

🔸 Book: Kittens first full moon

A cute and black&white book to read with the littles. The story is about a kitten who thinks the moon is a bowl of milk and he is trying to catch it only to find it moves further away however he tries.

🔸 Make the Letter K

We used a variety of materials to make letter K. Hands on learning is the best way to teach young kids( you have a word that begins with K there !). M was more enthusiastic to make the letter using keys and bear counters.

🔸K is for Kangaroo

To save some time on planning and prepping I resolved to an easy option for this letter craft. You could find many such letter crafts here where you just need to print, cut it and let them glue on as shown in the picture.

🔸 Letter Tracing mat

We used the letter tracing mat by Lavinia Pop. It has the right formation of letters numbered on each alphabets . This looks awesome to learn letter writing for preschoolers.

Day 5

🔸Bear and Kite

Yet another story of a bear and kite by Cliff wright to read during Letter K week.

🔸Heart Tree

A super simple snack to entice the hesitant toddler. I tried my best to make it look like a Koala though it looks much of a brown bear. I used peanut butter on the bread, banana & blueberries for eyes and cookies for nose.

🔸Koala Craft

How cute is that paper plate Koala. This girl loves painting and I have to do some sort of crafting with her daily. Supplies needed to make this Koala

  • Paper plate
  • Gray washable paint ( I mixed black and white to get gray paint)
  • Cotton balls
  • Cardstock
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Googly eyes

While they paint the paper plate gray cut out two circles for ears and an oval for nose. You can practice some shape recognition with them at this step too. Let them paint the ears and nose also gray color.

Once dried glue some cotton balls on center part of ear and staple it onto the paper plate. Add the googly eyes and pipe cleaner for mouth to finish the Koala craft.

🔸Extra printables

Sensory Bin

🔸Kinetic Sand play

We took out our Kinetic sand bin and made some castles and animals using the molds. She loved to squeeze the sand and it was fun to explore the unique texture of the kinetic sand.

Playdough Invitation

I grabbed some kitchen tools and homemade playdough to do some stamping. We used these

  • Potato masher
  • whisk
  • Wavy chopper
  • Apple slicer
  • melon baller
