Letter L Activities

Fall is around the corner and we’re enjoying the last bit of warm weather here. My all time favourite season is fall and I love to set up autumn theme activities for my kiddos. Coincidentally we’re learning about letter L and I cannot leave the leaves theme for this week activities. So here’s the lesson plan for this week with some focus theme each day.

If you’ve missed previous letter of the week activities please read them below.

Day 1

🔸Object Bin

For Letter L week I had the following in our object bin – Lion, Lemon, Leaves, Lock, Ladybug. I added some of my flashcards too to practice some object to picture matching too.

🔸Lava Lamp Experiment

🧪 Fill a tall glass with 3/4 cup of oil.
🧪 Add 1/4 cup colored water( use food color of choice) to that. The water will sink down as it does not mix with oil.
🧪 Once settled add one alka seltzer tab ( you can also cut them in quarters) to the glass. Don’t add more than one tablet or else it gets cloudy. Once it’s settled you can add more to recreate the reaction.

🔸 Letter Collage

Supplies needed.

After printing the Letter L I let her paint it black. Then she stuck the ladybugs all over it. It was a great fine motor work to peel those tiny stickers behind those ladybugs.

🔸Beginning Sound cut & paste

This beginning sound objects cut and paste worksheet is from Thisreadingmama Letter L packet which you can download for free from here.

Day 2

🔸 Book: We’re going on a lion hunt

Since she loved the classic we’re going on a bear hunt book I checked out this from library for our L week. She was head over heels in love with this book and I read it already so many times with her. It’s a fictional story where a teacher and her students going through various landscapes to find lion!!

🔸 Lion mane letter matching

I love making learning materials out of cardboard. Good for earth and easy on our wallets too. Cut out a circle from cardboard and draw the face of lion. Write down the alphabet on the edges and I gave her clothespin to clip on the ones that I cald out. I included only letters from A-K to make it easier.

🔸 Leaf Lion

A perfect craft activity for fall season. It’s inspired by a craft I saw over Pinterest. I had these plastic leaves that I got long back so we decided to do this for our afternoon craftivity. Supplies needed:

🍁Orange/ yellow paint.
🍁Cardstock paper.
🍁Plastic fall leaves.
🍁Black construction paper.
🍁Googly eyes.

First I let them paint a piece of paper Orange and yellow paint. Once it’s dried you can cut a face shape out of it. But my kids were so impatient that I let them glue down leaves on wet paint in a circle. Later add the eyes, nose and whiskers cut out from black construction paper. A fall leaf lion is ready to pounce!!.

Day 3

🔸Book: The Grouchy Ladybug

Yet another wonderful book from Eric Carle. It’s a great book to teach manners and being nice to fellow beings. Also for teaching time to kindergartens you do not have to look further. It’s about a grouchy ladybug who challenge many animals she meet to fight with her.

🔸Ladybug spots Counting DIY

A fun diy to learn counting and one to one correspondence for toddlers/ preschoolers. Supplies needed:

🐞Red & Black construction paper.
🐞 Number stickers ( from dollar store)
🐞Reinforcement label( from Walmart).
🐞Pom poms( you can use with or without magnets glued behind)
🐞Cookie sheet.

Once you make a small body and head using black paper cut two semi circles for wings from red paper. Stick the reinforcement labels on top and place the number stickers as shown. Let them put as many pom poms as given on each ladybug. Use cookie sheet if you have used magnetic pom poms.

🔸 Ladybug Craft

Nowadays a craft means paper plate is the first thing that comes to my mind and it’s such a versatile material that I don’t have to look further. So we made a paper plate ladybug for the bookish play.

🐞Paper plate.
🐞Red & Black paint.
🐞Bottle caps to paint spots.
🐞Black construction paper.
🐞Black pipe cleaner.

Paint the outer side of the plate red. Then we used bottle caps to print the spots. While it’s drying cut out six rectangular strips for legs and a semicircle for the head from a black construction paper. Glue down the legs and head in the inside of the plate. Add the googly eyes onto the head. Finally I pinched a hole on the head to add the pipe cleaner as antennas. Isn’t it a pretty grouchy ladybug ?🤗🤗

Day 4

🔸 Book: Leaf Man

To start the day of Leaves theme we read this book by Lois Ehlert. The kids will have fun finding different animals or shapes with leaves throughout this book.

🔸 Leaf Emotions

To go along with the book we made some leaf people with feelings. I used the plastic leaves from dollar tree and glued them on craft sticks. Use some cups with a slit on top to stand them up. Using markers draw any emotions on the leaves that you like to address.

Learning about feelings could help toddlers during those terrible tantrums. We did excited/happy /sad/scared/surprised and I asked her to point out each feelings. After that we made up a ‘five little leaves’ song and she loved knocking each one down. A good counting practice too!!

🔸Leaf Suncatcher

A simple leaf craft perfect for toddlers. Supplies needed:

  • Contact paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Red/orange/yellow tissue paper cut in pieces.

Steps to make the fall leaf suncatcher:

  • Cut the contact paper in the shape of a leaf( make two of these).
  • Outline it on a black construction paper and cut the inside of black paper.
  • Line one leaf contact paper shape with the black paper.
  • Let them place the tissue paper pieces onto the sticky side of leaf.
  • Once fully covered top it up with the other leaf contact paper shape to seal the tissue paper pieces.

A classic counting book for toddlers. This book have those cute 3D ladybugs which is sure to hold the attention of the littles. They can touch & feel and count them as we flip through the pages.

🔸Ladybugs on a Stick

Here’s a simple bookish play to go along with this classic counting book Ten Little Ladybugs.

Supplies ➡️
🐞Paint stir stick.
🐞Pom poms.
🐞Velcro dots.
🐞Black marker.

Using the marker I made some dots and head on the colourful poms and attached the velcro on them. Stuck the other velcro pair on paint stick and numbered them. Let them get those pom pom ladybugs onto the stick while counting each one. It’s an easy way to introduce number sense to toddlers.

🔸L is for Ladybug Craft

Afternoon we did a letter craft and it’s aladybug this time.

  • block letter L
  • Black & Blue paint
  • Droppers
  • Red & Green construction paper
  • Qtips
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners

First I let her use some droppers to spread blue color on the Letter L. It was hard to get the colors even on the letter. But she requested for the dropper so I let her use it.

Once it’s dried cut it out and paste on another color paper. Cut two semicircles for wings and glue them as shown. Using some bundled qtips I let het dab the black dots on wings. Add two googly eyes and pipe cleaners as antenna to finish the craft.

🔸Match the L words

These printables are from Totlabs and you can download them for free here. I cut those circles out, laminated them and gave her to match it on the sheet.

Sensory Bin

🔸Fall Leaves Bin

What’s in the bin➡️

  • Corn kernels
  • Red dyed rice
  • Felt leaves
  • Leaf shaped plate
  • Orange colander
  • Jars & spoons

M had much fun making the sweet mess and she loved those wooden dolls. R has lost interest in these kind of bins and I think I need to accept that he’s grown up and no more a little kid 😞.

Playdough Invitation

🔸Make a Fall tree

I made yellow & orange Playdough for fall theme play. Here’s what’s in the tray.

  • Craft Sticks
  • Felt leaves
  • pinecones
  • Googly eyes
  • Orange glitter balls
  • Colorful pins to poke
  • Playdough tools

This is usually an invitation to play and anything that they create is a big win! Normally I will make something next to her and she tries to copy me. Playdough is a wonderful way to develop those tiny muscles while unleashing the creativity in them.
